Winterhawks one up on Whitecourt

The Slave Lake Winterhawks did as expected in their league playoff opener on the weekend, beating the Whitecourt Cats handily. In provincial playdowns they ran into a stiffer challenge, falling 6 – 3 to Westlock on Saturday.
The ‘Hawks will play the Grimshaw Huskies here at home in the second game of their round robin series to see who represents the northwest at the Senior ‘A’ Provincials. If they lose they won’t be going, but if they win there’s a good chance they will, since two of the three teams will make it. Westlock now has the inside track, but must travel to Grimshaw for its other game. The Grimshaw – Slave Lake game will probably be this Thursday, although it was not confirmed as of Monday morning.
In league playoffs, the ‘Hawks dumped Whitecourt 12 – 3 on Sunday. Their four first period goals were enough, but they poured in another eight just to be on the safe side. Jason Green led the way with four goals and Ryan Dierker added another three.
Eddie Giroux, Kelly Pearson, Dennis Paleck, Chris Hatch and Scott Lawrence scored the rest. Calvin Beauchamp was the winning goalie.
The game sheet from the Westlock game shows that the Winterhawks outshot the Wolfpack 43 – 23, but goals from Dion Poitras, Brian Bouchard and Dierker was all they could manage. Westlock scored four times on 11 shots in the first period and that was the story.
The Winterhawks resume their series against Whitecourt on Saturday in Whitecourt and are back home for Game 3 of the best-of-five affair Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
