Winterhawks over Whitecourt

A “bruised up” Winterhawks’ team survived its opening playoff series against the Whitecourt Cats. They beat the Cats 8 – 4 on Saturday and then won the best-of-five series when Whitecourt failed to show up on Sunday.
Saturday’s final score did not reflect the nature of the game. According to Coach Lorne Poitras it was close, tough game most of the way.
“It was a rough battle,” he says. “We’ve got a few bruises.”
Poitras didn’t say much about who is bruised or how badly. But hopefully they’ll be ready to play on the weekend when the Hinton Heat come to town. The Heat beat Edson in the other semi-final, setting up a re-match of last year’s league championship series.
The times of the games this weekend had not been determined by press time.
In Saturday’s win over Whitecourt, the ‘Hawks took a 2 – 0 first-period lead on goals by Jason Green and Ryan Dierker. Whitecourt got one back in the second before Chris Hatch scored to make it 3 – 1.
Dierker made it 4 – 1 early in the third, but the Cats struck back with the next two to make it 4 – 3. The Winterhawks scored four times in the last seven minutes. Dierker, Green, Craig Dombrosky and Green again got the goals. Calvin Beauchamp was the winning goalie.
The Winterhawks had a new face in the line-up – Wolves’ coach Kurt Walsten played his first game of the season for the team and earned an assist on one goal.
