Calahasen faces the Chamber
Considering the circumstances, Lesser Slave Lake MLA Pearl Calahasen’s appearance at the Slave Lake & District Chamber of Commerce meeting last Tuesday was a relatively tame affair. She and her team explained their positions on the oilpatch conflict between contractors and First Nations, leaving time for a few questions and that was it.
Town council finds its man
The hunt for a new town manager for Slave Lake is over. Jay Simons of Burns Lake, British Columbia will take over the job vacated last year by Curtis Herzberg on Mar. 24.

Mike Skrynyk eyes up the shot in an Oilmen’s game on the weekend. The curling Rink was busy from Thursday through Sunday hosting the 39th Annual Oilmen’s Bonspiel. “Everything went really well,” says Slave Lake Petroleum Association President Chris Hatch.

Ace Power Tongs wins Oilmen's
The Ace Power Tongs team emerged as the Oilmen’s Bonspiel champion on the weekend, capping four days of curling action at the Slave Lake Curling Club. Skipped by Edmontonian Brian Blaylock, the Ace rink came from behind to beat Brent Giblin’s Slave Lake Hotshot #2 by an 8 – 5 score.
Winterhawks grind out two wins
The North Central Hockey League championship series is underway and Slave Lake has the two-game advantage. Nobody should be surprised that the Winterhawks beat the Hinton Heat at home, but the wins were not of the usual variety. They were both close, low-scoring games.
Wolves up 3 - 1 on Sexsmith
Wolves Coach Kurt Walsten expected, or hoped, to be up three games to one over the Sexsmith Vipers after the first four games of their best of seven NWJHL semi-final. What he didn’t expect was for the Wolves to do better on Sexsmith ice than they did at home.
