The Ace Power Tongs team emerged as the Oilmen’s Bonspiel champion on the weekend, capping four days of curling action at the Slave Lake Curling Club. Skipped by Edmontonian Brian Blaylock, the Ace rink came from behind to beat Brent Giblin’s Slave Lake Hotshot #2 by an 8 – 5 score.
“We were down 5 – 1 after three.” says Lead Kim Seppola. “We ground it out.”
Seppola says it’s the first time a team he’s been on has won the tournament.
“We’ve lost a lot of times,” he says.
The other members of the winning team were Second Dana Seppola and Third Wade Johnston.
Giblin has been at the top before. This time, his team of Bob Chute (another former champ), Ken Giblin and Tim Lindsey will have to settle for the runner-up position.
Ace got to the final by beating the Klaus team in Sunday morning’s semi-final. Hotshot beat Cadastral in the other semi.
In the ‘B’ Event, Duane Verschoor’s Vertech rink beat out Nabors. They made it to the final over Cadastral #1 and Landing Transport.
The ‘C’ winner was National Oilwell, skipped by Gordon Kircher. They beat the Mighty Peace Petroleum Association team out of Grande Prairie.
The ‘D’ Event saw Duane Hodge’s Bulldog squad beat out Emes Electric. Finally, in the ‘E’ it was PAMCO ‘B’, skipped by Dan Fraser over Seguin II.
The full complement of 64 teams took part in this year’s Oilmen’s. As always, it had the town’s hospitality industry hopping like mad for three nights and parts of four days, as 256 curlers and spectators congregated in town. Run by the Slave Lake Petroleum Association, the Oilmen’s usually raises several thousand dollars, which the association donates through the year to minor sports and other local charitable organizations.
