Winterhawks repeat as league champions

Slave Lake’s Senior hockey team is the North Central Hockey League champion for the second year in a row. The Winterhawks wasted no time, disposing of the Hinton Heat in the minimum four games.
Games 3 and 4 were both 8 – 4 wins for Slave Lake in Hinton this past Saturday and Sunday.
“Another banner to go up,” says Coach Lorne Poitras. “The guys played really well.”
Hinton’s goaltending wasn’t as sharp as it sometimes is. A week earlier the Heat had held the high-scoring Winter- hawks to five goals in a couple of wins. This time, says Poitras, “their goaltending wasn’t sharp.”
Scoring for the Winterhawks in Saturday’s game was Shane Hordal and Chris Hatch with two each, Brian Bouchard, Ryan Dierker, Adam Ching and Craig Dombrosky. There were very few penalties in the game and the ‘Hawks outshot the Heat 40 – 29.
On Sunday Dierker scored his team’s last four goals. Adam Ching picked up a couple and Keith Sinclair and Scott Lawrence scored the others.
The league voted the Green, Hansen, Bouchard line as the playoff MVP.
On another front the Winterhawks are still waiting to hear from the Grimshaw Huskies on the provincial playdown game the teams are supposed to play. Grimshaw likewise hasn’t played Westlock. Poitras says the games are supposed to be finished by Mar. 16.
