Here’s an alert for coffee drinkers. If you like a bit of the bean and also like the idea of sticking it to the corporations who control much of the world’s trade in that popular commodity, Gerry Myre at Bean Here in the mall has just the stuff for you. It’s called ‘Fair Trade Coffee.’Apparently there are cooperatives representing independent, organic coffee growers that circumvent the conglomerates’ control over the market and pay the farmers 42 cents on the pound rather than seven cents. That means the coffee costs Gerry more, but he says he isn’t passing the cost on to his customers.
“They’re buying it by the pound,” he says.

Here’s a note from Kirk Wolstenholme, who attends university in Prince George, B.C. Kirk is looking for runners to compete with him in either the Canadian Death Race in Grande Cache or the Kananaskis 100k relay. He sent us an e-mail asking about how to get in touch with the local running club. You can reach Kirk at kirk_wolstenholme@hotmail.com.

And here’s another thing: Harry Bartlett is running another NHL playoff hockey pool. This time it’s in aid of the community complex project – that’s the one that proposes an addition to Northern Lakes College housing among other things a performing arts theatre to replace the ailing Walter Twinn Theatre. Harry needs to sell 250 entries to cover his $2,250 total prizes. Last year’s Olympic hockey pool had about 600 entries, so he shouldn’t have too much trouble. Entry is 10 bucks, three for $25 or seven for $50. The Leader is in for three entries, and so, we hear, is KWA Radio. We even hear that KWA has the nerve to challenge The Leader to a separate Media Challenge, and that Harry is putting up a golf shirt for the winner. Naturally we are honour-bound to accept this brash challenge and look forward to showing those radio scrubs (we hear they never take their toques off) who the real hockey experts are!

This just in: Cable TV and Slave Lake’s other newspaper are on board in the media challenge as well. So come June whatever, the true news media heavyweights will emerge. Lord, let this not be the year that somebody’s mom-who-made- her-choices-totally-at-random ends up winning!

Hey, that was a nice event out at The Point last Wednesday! Good food, good people, good prizes. John Berry was very funny as the emcee, and Mikisew Sport Fishing and Ft. McMurray Tourism got some decent local exposure. But so did The Point and our beautiful lake, all on somebody else’s tab.
