Slave Lake’s Bantam Sabres made a good account of themselves at the provincial ‘A’ championships in Wainwright on the weekend. The Sabres won two of three of their round robin games before losing the semi-final to Ponoka.
In the opening game, the Sabres were all over Lethbridge, walking away with a 7 – 1 victory. The Sabres led 2 – 0 after one period on goals by Trevor Ahola and Jordan Rippon.
In the second, Chris Bath, Ahola, and Kyle Twin scored to make it 5 – 0. In the third Lethbridge scored first, but Twin and Mathew Broad finished it off.
Game 2 saw the Sabres lose 5 – 3 to Peace River. The teams traded goals in the first, with Ahola scoring for Slave Lake. In the second Peace River took a 3 – 1 lead. They improved it to 4 – 1 in the third before the Sabres came back with two goals by Alexander MacIsaac to make it a one-goal game. Peace River got their fifth into an empty net.
In their final round robin game the Sabres came out on the high side of a 5 – 3 score over Strathcona, but it took a third-period rally to do it.
Twin got things going with the first period’s only goal. In the second Strathcona scored twice and Nicholas Plourde replied for Slave Lake. In the third, Twin, Bath and MacIsaac scored for the Sabres.
That win put the Sabres into Sunday’s semi-final against Ponoka. Ponoka led 2 – 0 after one period. MacIsaac scored in the second for Slave Lake to make it 2 – 1. In the third, Ray Sloan and Twin scored for the Sabres, but Ponoka got four of their own.
The game stars for the Sabres were Cole Willier, Alexander MacIsaac, Kyle Twin and Ray Sloan. The line of MacIsaac, Plourde and Twin led their team in scoring, with eight, seven and six points, respectively.
