Midgets go 2 - 2 at provincials

Slave Lake’s Midget Storm ended their 2002/03 season on a reasonably positive note at the provincial ‘A’ championships at Beaverlodge on the weekend. The Storm won two and lost two of their round robin games in the four-day tournament.
“They did not too bad,” says Coach Jim Zinyk. “Pretty darn well.”
The only bad game came at the hands of St. Paul – a 12 – 0 loss. Otherwise they won two games by combined score of 13 – 5 and lost a close one 4 – 2 to Beaumont. The first game was a 7 – 4 win over the Edmonton Maple Leafs.
Michael Zinyk scored three times for the Storm and Kiel Ching got a couple in the game. Dane Boisvert and Darryl Garon scored the others.
The second was the blowout loss to St. Paul. The Storm bounced back nicely from that loss to defeat Cochrane 6 – 1. Shawn Gramlich scored two goals to lead his team. Gregg Whitney, Garon, Stephen Bezan and Ching got the others.
Against Beaumont, even if the score had been reversed they probably would not have made the playoffs, due to goal differential. In that game Whitney and Boisvert got the goals.
Zinyk says the 12 – 0 loss to St. Paul was not really indicative of the play. The game was pretty close for a while and if the Storm had been able to score on a couple of good chances, he figures it would have been a lot closer.
Zinyk wasn’t sure who ended up winning the tournament, but Drayton Valley, “was just blowing teams away,” he says.
