Novice Elks win league title

Slave Lake teams finished first and second in the Sturgeon Pembina Novice East League this season. The playoffs wrapped up on Mar. 23 with the Slave Lake Elks beating the Slave Lake Jr. Hawks 6 – 4 for the championship.
The Elks went into the game with a fairly comfortable 8 – 5 lead in the two-game, total-goal series. The game was tied 1 – 1 after the first period. Kolby Lukan scored for the Elks and Derek Davis for the Hawks. In the second the Elks took a 4 – 3 lead on two goals by Mathew Monaghan and one by Lukan. Davis and Lance Filgate replied for the Hawks.
Filgate scored again for the Hawks in the third, but it wasn’t enough. Elks’ goals by Lukan and Cody Stasow made the difference.
The first game was also tied 1 – 1 after one period on goals by Eric Pawluski for the Elks and Garret Atkinson for the Hawks.
In the second the Elks broke out for three goals and took a 4 – 2 lead. Kolby Lukan, Mathew Monaghan and Tye Rubisch scored for the Elks and Michael Bergen for the Hawks.
The third saw the Elks pour on the offense even stronger. Pawluski, Monaghan, Lukan and Monaghan again scored to put the game out of reach. Shelby Cyr scored two for the Hawks and Derek Davis got the other. Colten Hansen was the winning goalie.
