Slave Lake, Alberta

The Page

Mocha the Pomeranian paid us a visit last Thursday. Mocha had just been to the vet and got a big needle with five different drugs in it. She’s a tiny little thing, about as cute as you can imagine. Anyway, in walks Rachael and says to her mom: Can you baby sit her for an hour? Not much for a doggie to do in a newspaper office, but Mocha got in some decent face licking.

We hear Premier Ralph Klein will be in Slave Lake this June to play golf at Gilwood. It’s probably a fundraiser for something or other but we don’t have the details right now. We’ll get ‘em to you as they break.

In other upcoming events, Slave Lake’s Ukrainian dancers are putting on a show at The Gathering Place on Apr. 12.

Listen up you rural people. Your municipal district administration is looking for possible new names for the M.D. of Lesser Slave River. Turns out the current name is too cumbersome or that ‘Lesser’ term just doesn’t give the right impression. Looks like ‘County’ of something is what council is after for the big region that stretches from Assineau to Flatbush. But in case you haven’t read the report on Page 13, be warned that council has already rejected ‘County of Assinbush.’ ‘Flat-Ass County’ probably won’t fly too far either.

As you may have heard, the Walter Twinn Theatre is no more. It became the home of the Slave Lake Musical Theatre Association in about 1984 and was the scene of many fine and funny performances of music and drama over the years. The Leader plans to do a retrospective piece on the theatre and would very much appreciate the loan of any photos or programs from shows past. For that matter, stories from the heyday of the theatre would come in very handy too. Give us a call at 849-4380.

Super Scrabble shark Marilyn Larivee successfully defended her Winter Blahs Scrabble Tournament title last week by beating newcomer Dave Crane 349 to 252. Marilyn saved her best games for the playoffs this year, after finishing in fourth spot in the round robin. Dave had the highest score of the tournament, going over 400 in a quarter-final victory. But in the final his luck ran out. Thanks to Grounds on Main, Boston Pizza and the Municipal Library for the prizes.

Oops, we goofed! Prizes in Harry Bartlett’s NHL playoff hockey pool aren’t based on entries. They’re fixed - $1,000 for first, $500 for second, $250 for third, $125 for fourth and fifth.
