Slave Lake’s winter swim club finished its season in Peace River on the first weekend of April with some good showings. According to a release from the club, the small contingent of Polar Bears “was a force to be reckoned with” at the meet.
Two Polar Bears earned third place aggregate medals. Garret Meyer got third overall for 9 & 10-year-old boys. Matthias Zeug got the bronze aggregate in his 15 & over boys age group.
Tia Haunts and Natalie Meyer were the other Polar Bear competitors at the meet. Both did well.
The team of four swimmers competed in 21 races and brought home ribbons in 15 of them. They included three firsts, two seconds, eight thirds and two fourth places finishes.
The Polar Bears this season had 22 swimmers, six of whom made up the competitive team. The kids swam two nights a week and held time trials once per month to gauge their improvement.
Training for the winter swimmers is broken down into three components: fundamentals for the beginners, stroke improvement for the intermediate swimmers and for the competitive swimmers – endurance and fine-tuning.
The season is in two sessions – from October to December and from January to May. Membership is open to swimmers aged six to 18.
This season all swimmers improved on their previous best times and some won medals at the three competitive meets they attended.
