Slave Lake, Alberta

Ladies fastball making a comeback?

Joe McWilliams
Lakeside Leader

Before the rise of slowpitch, ladies fastball was a going concern in Slave Lake. It’s been absent for quite some time, but is making a combeack, if current efforts to put together a team work out.
“From the women I have talked to already there is definitely an interest,” says Trina Torgerson, who is trying to resurrect the sport in Slave Lake.
What Torgerson has in mind is possibly competing in the ladies fastball league at the other end of the lake, which has seven teams. They play two games a week – one at home and one away. On the other hand, the Slave Lake team could choose to just compete in tournaments.
Fastball differs from slowpitch mainly in the speed and style of delivery of the pitch. Torgerson has been researching the history of ladies’ fastball in Slave Lake and found that there was a league in town from sometime in the 1970s through to perhaps the mid-1980s.
“All the women I have talked to absolutely loved it,” she says.
Some of the teams were the ‘Widewater Wonderettes’ the ‘Starettes’ and the ‘Lakers.’
