Municipal tax time looms
Property owners in Slave Lake should begin watching their mailboxes for the dreaded assessment and property tax notices in the next day or two, says Mayor Ray Stern. That’s because they’re responsible to see those bills are paid by the end of June – and even appeal time is limited.
Francis Gladue new Bigstone chief
Francis G. Gladue is the new Chief of the Bigstone Cree Nation. Gladue – a long-time Bigstone employee – beat five other contenders in the Apr. 29 by-election. The by-election became necessary after Chief Gordon T. Auger retired earlier this year.

Three members of the Engler family are gung-ho to go on the MS 150 Bike Tour next month. Dad Martin, along with daughters Amy and 10-year-old Kadi will pedal from Leduc to Camrose and back again on June 7 & 8 to raise money for research into a cure for multiple sclerosis.

Synchro swimmers compete at provincials
Slave Lake’s synchronized swimming team placed seventh of 11 Tier I teams at the provincial championships in Medicine Hat last month. It was the first year that the Indicas have competed at all, having been a recreational club up until last fall.
Soccer starts with 370 kids
Minor soccer off to what may be another record-breaking season. This week on Monday the first practices started and will continue four nights a week until the end of June.
