Minor soccer off to what may be another record-breaking season. This week on Monday the first practices started and will continue four nights a week until the end of June.
Age groups range from five-year-olds up to the Under 18s. There are travel teams from Under 12 up and house leagues at every age group.
Association President Greg Sauer says although registration is officially over, “we won’t turn anybody away” if they show up late wanting to play.
No tournaments are planned for Slave Lake this year, but the travel teams will be hitting the road next weekend to compete at the big Millwoods tournament. Slave Lake teams have had pretty good results at Millwoods that past few seasons and expect to compete hard again this year.
Sauer says the long-term goal of the association is to have dedicated soccer facility in Slave Lake with several fields and a clubhouse all in one location. When (or if) that happens is when Slave Lake will become a place to host tournaments, he says.
The total number of kids in soccer this year is somewhere between 370 and 380.
“I think that makes us the biggest minor sport in town," Sauer says.
