He’s been called the ‘anchor of health care’, ‘community supporter’, ‘physician’ and ‘friend’. And now Slave Lake’s Dr Paul Caffaro is being recognized as the community’s Citizen of the Year for 2002.
“Dr. Caffaro came as a young doctor with a young family and has always stayed in the community, even after his children grew up then left on their various careers,” says one nominator.
“And for over 20 years he has been our anchor in heath care, always there for us. He has made his home here….and is an integral part of our lives and community.”
Caffaro was one of seven names proffered earlier this year when the Slave Lake Native Friendship Centre and the Lakeside Leader asked residents to share their ideas for Citizen of the Year.
Physician and medical entrepreneur, he’s served in many roles at hospitals and health clinics in this area for more than a quarter century. Early in his career, he played a role as physicians took to the skies to provide health care in the more remote northern communities of Wabasca, Peerless and Trout Lakes, always pushing to attract rural physicians to the community. At the same time, the Citizen of the Year continued to expand his own expertise, offering still more options for patients in the region.
But more than being saluted for his contributions to the medical community, the Citizen of the Year is also being recognized as a strong supporter of the church, serving in a variety of roles in that community.
He’s also generous with his time and presence at the Vanderwell seniors’ lodge in both professional and personal visits, says another nominator, and is just as quick to share a smile and kind word where ever he travels in the community.
But it’s the ‘good doctor’s’ caring attitude, genuine concern and commitment to staying that’s won the undying gratitude, say his nominators
“Just knowing he is here, steadfastly looking after us when we, or our loved ones are ill, gives me a secure feeling.
“We have been very fortunate to have him through all the ups and downs of health care problems in the province.
“We salute you, Dr. Paul!”
Leader representative Joe McWilliams presented the Citizen of the Year with his award at the Friendship Centre’s annual Volunteer Appreciation banquet last week.
Other nominees for the 2002 Citizen of the Year award included Harry Bartlett, Dennis Barton, Stuart Hartman and Kelly Parent (joint), Stu Lafoy, Carolann Porterfield, and Cliff Sinclair.
