Slave Lake, Alberta

Ten Slave Lake runners do city half marathon

Slave Lake runners are making a habit of showing up in force at various Edmonton running events. The May 4 Sounds of Spring half-marathon was no exception, with Slave Lakers making up just under five per cent of the total.
They turned in some decent results too, in cool, damp conditions through Edmonton’s river valley.
Felipe Barocio - perhaps Slave Lake’s best runner - finished fourth overall in 1:28:53.
“It was a good race,” says Barocio, who placed well in several races last summer and has ambitions to run for Alberta at national events. “I felt good for the first race of the season.”
Henri Soulodre crossed the line in 15th overall in a time of 1:38:25. Leslie Sargunaraj was 45th in 1:52:50, good enough for second in his age group. Deborah Seal finished in just over two hours, good for 83rd place. Brian McCormack wasn’t far behind at 2:03:37.
Sabine Soulodre-Gutekunst finished in 114th place in 2:06:06, which was almost exactly the middle of the pack.
Next on the Slave Lake list was Lyne Lachappelle in a time of 2:19:27, Holly Emes in 2:23:24, Dawn Nakamura in 2:23:24 and finally Cyril Borthistle in 2:38:44.
The race was a hilly affair, starting at the Shaw Convention Centre and following diverse paths along the south and back along the north sides of the North Saskatchewan River.
Two hundred and thirty-five runners finished the race.
