The latest from the big communiplex hockey pool is that only seven per cent of all entries had Minnesota players and only 14 per cent had Anaheim players. One entry has four Wild players and one has five Mighty Ducks. Those are the lucky ones. Pool statistician Harry Bartlett says 93 per cent of entries had Detroit players. Surprisingly, only 46 per cent of poolies took any New Jersey players, compared to 78 per cent picking up at least one Senator.

Congratulations to Lorne Larson, who was recently appointed as a public member of the College of Alberta Professional Foresters. Lorne will represent the public interest on the college’s complaint review committees and hearing tribunals dealing with unprofessional conduct of regulated members. It won’t keep him too busy. Lorne says there have only been two such hearings since 1985, which seems to suggest that professional foresters are doing their jobs properly. Lorne says he applied for the position with a letter of recommendation from the local forest advisory committee, of which he has been a member for the past five or six years.

Congrats also to the Lesser Slave Forest Education Society, for its nomination for an Alberta Emerald Award for Environmental Excellence. LSFES educator M.J. Munn-Kristoff tells us that the LSFES is a finalist for the award, which will be presented in Calgary on June 11.

Construction seems to be winding down on the new Rexall store, next door to The Leader office. We’ve gotten so used to plumbers, electricians, carpenters, drywallers and even surveyors passing through the office we’re going to miss them when they’re finally gone. We won’t miss all those days of no heat though.

How about that coffee house at the college last Thursday? Great job by a whole bunch of local musical people, capped off by a ripping fine one-act play by the Michener drama department, in which Stephen Bezan played a very convincing drunk butler.
The Roland Michener Gr. 9 Band used the coffee house as a dress rehearsal for their MusicFest Canada performance in Toronto this coming weekend and sounded - and looked - quite professional.

It was nice to see some people out picking up garbage around town last week. Alas, there weren’t nearly enough of them and the trash seems to pile up almost as fast as it can be picked up. But every bit helps.
