Praying for quick end to mad cow dilemma
ast to coast, their American neighbours and officials around the world awaited word on the dilemma wreaked when a single cow from the Fairview region tested positive for BSE – bovine spongiform encephalopathy – last week, cattlemen in the Slave Lake area said the resulting border closures and slowdowns at auction markets could be just as painful for the smalltime producer as the large feedlot operations.
Smoking by-law passes first reading
Slave Lake Town Council gave first reading to its new smoking by-law at its May 20 meeting. What that means is that the proposed by-law will go to a public hearing. What it doesn’t mean is that it will necessarily end up looking like it did at first reading.

Heat on top after first week of men's league baseball
The Sawridge Jr. Heat won their first game of the men’s league season, but not by much. Playing against the Cardinals last Wednesday, the defending league champs needed a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to escape with an 8 – 7 victory.
Wolves seek input for 20th season
Anyone who doesn’t want to see Junior hockey die in Slave Lake better step up to the plate. Or into the faceoff circle. The Wolves need a major sponsor (or sponsors), billets for players, players to billet and volunteers to fill executive positions.
