Slave Lake, Alberta

Wolves seek input for 20th season

Anyone who doesn’t want to see Junior hockey die in Slave Lake better step up to the plate. Or into the faceoff circle. The Wolves need a major sponsor (or sponsors), billets for players, players to billet and volunteers to fill executive positions.
If they don’t get them, chances are the team will not operate next season.
“I don’t want to see something like this die,” says Larry Leganchuk, who is trying to drum up community support for the club.
The Wolves have to decide by the end of this month whether or not they will take part in the 2003/04 season. They will be expected to announce their decision at the league meetings on May 31. The Wolves’ association meeting is on Thursday, May 29 at the arena at 7:30 p.m.
“Without the support of the community in the way of volunteers and sponsors, we will not be able to field a team next year,” says Leganchuk.
The shortfall begins with players. The pool of local players has never been so small – Leganchuk figures the number is about 10. That means the team needs recruiting, which takes time and effort. Players from out of town need billets. The team ought to be able to compensate the billets but it can’t do that without solid financial support from companies or from successful fundraising projects. With the Sawridge Hotel having withdrawn the support it provided the past couple of years, the club is right back to square one, or pretty close to it. But the Wolves have been there before.
“Maybe there’s somebody out there with good fundraising ideas,” says Leganchuk.
All positions, including coaching, are open.
For more information call Leganchuk at 849-1505.
