Ladies fastball made its return to Slave Lake last Wednesday night after about a 20-year absence. And the Slave Lake Storm gave the spectators something to talk about, beating a team from Whitefish Lake by a score of 15 – 10.
Early on, the game gave no indication it would be such a high-scoring affair. Both teams had trouble getting anything going for the first few innings, but eventually the hitters started finding the ball and the balls started finding the holes.
The Storm had the first breakthrough when they loaded the bases for Shereen Bouchard, who promptly emptied them with an inside the park home run. That made it 5 – 1 and at the time it looked more than enough. But in the latter innings the hits and runs started piling up for both teams. Whitefish had a huge final at bat, coming back from a 10-run deficit to make the score respectable.
Paulette Ward pitched six innings for the Storm, handing the ball to Michelle Ghostkeeper to get the final three outs.
Coach Brian Bouchard says he was very pleased with the way the Storm played their first game.
“They played very well,” he says. “We’ve got the raw talent, we just need to work (on a few things).”
The Storm play one home game and one road game every week for the next six weeks or so, against teams from the High Prairie area. On Monday they played the Gift Lake Bunnies in Gift Lake and on Wednesday they play Grouard at the Sinclair Diamonds.
The Storm have a 12-game regular season schedule, followed by playoffs.
