Load kills crane operator

A 62-year-old Hay Lakes crane operator died at Mitsue Industrial Park last week when material he was loading fell onto him.
Staff sergeant Dave Shardlow from Slave Lake’s RCMP detachment says Franklin Glyn Siemens was loading some metal onto a flatbed truck when the load got “hung up on the flatbed.” Siemens got out of the crane and was attempting to adjust the load when a ‘gravity hook’ that was holding the load let go. The load fell on the operator, killing him instantly.
A ‘swamper’ who was helping the operator at the site was not injured and called 911.
Shardlow says Occupational Health and Safety officials investigated the matter too, but he doesn’t expect to receive any information from that department.
“They deal with labour-force related injuries, looking for ways to prevent (such accidents) from happening in the future.”
