Rumour has it……… that the Sawridge Mall is expanding to make room for a bigger Extra Foods supermarket. It’s more than a rumour that the mall has applied to the Town for a zoning change that would allow such an expansion. Presumably, Extra Foods is doing it to get the jump on Sobey’s IGA Garden Market, which may or may not be starting construction sometime next year where the present Three Acres Trailer Court is.

While we’re on the topic of development, it looks like there are two new buildings going up at the north end of Main St. One, we hear, will house Direct Current, which is being displaced by the Garden Market. The other is a warehouse for Nordic Repair.

There was a rumour floating around in the past few months that a MAJOR MOTION PICTURE was inquiring about doing some filming here. Now that they’ve decided not to we can talk about it. The movie is to be called ‘Emperor Zehnder,’ starring Richard Gere as Bruno P. (for penguin) Zehnder, the Swiss photographer who devoted his life (and lost it in the process) to photographing the emperor penguins of the Antarctic. The word is the producers came up with enough money to actually film in Antarctica, against which Lesser Slave Lake didn’t stand a chance.
