An estimated 300 particiipants of all ages joined the throng Friday to salute Aboriginal Day in Slave Lake. Organizer Florence Gladue was pleased with the turnout, adding Aboriginal Day was originally struck to help increase awarness across Canada about Aboriginal culture and tradition. She said she’ll visit with schools this week to talk to students about that subject, and hopes to have displays to help her heighten that awareness in Slave Lake and area.

New home for province, town under one roof
Saying it’s an ‘excellent opportunity’ that’s too good to pass up, Slave Lake’s mayor announced last week the province wants to partner with this community to build a facility that’ll serve as a new home for both. Even better, it could come at no cost to the municipality.
Harassment by-law will increase accountability
A new bullying and harassment bylaw that will make so-called “‘consensual fights’ in the bar, along the bear trails and on the front lawn” punishable by a hefty fine in Slave Lake is not about handing out big tickets. It’s about making participants accountable for their actions.

A Westlock player heads upfield with the Slave Lake Strikers’ Gordie Ferguson in hot pursuit in a game between the two Senior soccer teams last Thursday. The Strikers won the game 8 - 4. The teams play again in Westlock this week.

Soccer teams win gold in Millet
Two Slave Lake soccer teams won first place at a tournament in Millet on the June 14 weekend. The Under 12 Boys and Girls both got the job done, bringing home gold medals and maintaining the record of success Slave Lake teams have had at tournaments in recent years.
Lee Hunt wins Men's Open
High Prairie golfer Lee Hunt likes golfing at Gilwood. He’s won the Men’s Open there before and he did it again on the June 12 weekend, finishing 36 holes in 152 strokes, five better than John Keaveny of Slave Lake.
