The Sawridge Jr. ‘AAA’ Heat took over sole possession of second place in the Alberta Jr. ‘AAA’ league on the weekend. They did it by beating the Calgary Dinos on Saturday and splitting a pair with Strathcona Athletics on Sunday.
With the two wins the Heat improved their record to five wins and four losses on the season. Saturday’s game in Calgary was an 8 – 5 victory for Slave Lake. Bradley Sinclair got the win, pitching six innings and Blair Sinclair came on in relief to get the save. Rain forced the cancellation of the second game in the doubleheader.
On Sunday the Heat started out badly, losing 7 – 2 to Strathcona. Numerous errors contributed to the bad result. But as they have done before this season, the Heat rebounded nicely.
The second game saw the Heat take a 3 – 0 lead and hold it all the way to the seventh inning behind the pitching of Jean Patrick Mailhot. With two men on and no one out in the final inning Coach Kevin Bohnert pulled Mailhot in favour of Scott Sinclair. Sinclair allowed a bloop single that the runners didn’t anticipate and therefore didn’t advance. Then Sinclair settled down and struck out the next two batters.
This weekend the Heat face the St. Albert Tigers twice on Saturday, and the Parkland White Sox for a pair on Sunday at Charity Park in Slave Lake. The local men’s league playoffs are also scheduled to take place this weekend, so it should be a big couple of days of baseball down at the diamonds.
