Heat split with league-leading Tigers

The Sawridge Jr. ‘AAA’ Heat continued their trend of splitting doubleheaders on the weekend. Up against the powerful St. Albert Tigers, the Heat lost badly in the first game, but battled back to win another close one in the second.
“That’s only their second loss of the season,” says Heat Manager Hugh McEvoy.
The Tigers’ other loss was also at the hands of the Slave Lake team.
The first game was a stinker for the home town boys.
Brad Sinclair started for the Heat and threw well for two or three innings, but then his teammates started making errors and things fell apart. The final score was 15 – 2 for St. Albert.
As has been the case so often this season, the second game was a different story altogether. With J.P. Mailhot on the hill and the Heat defence playing the way it can, the Tigers managed only three runs. In the seventh inning with the score tied 3 - 3 the Tigers had the bases loaded with two out, but Mailhot struck out the next batter to end the threat.
In their half of the inning, the Heat got a couple of guys on base and then the Tigers loaded the bases intentionally and pulled the fielders in anticipating a ground ball to go to work on. “Brent Blachford hit one over their heads,” says McEvoy.
That scored Scott Sinclair and the Heat were 4 – 3 winners.
McEvoy says you could tell by the Tigers’ reaction that they aren’t used to losing and don’t like it.
With a record of 6 – 5 in the ‘AAA’ league, the Heat have a good chance of finishing second behind the Tigers. It may well depend on what happens this weekend coming up. The Calgary Dinos are in town Saturday for a pair of games and on Sunday the Parkland White Sox visit.
It’ll be the last chance for Slave Lake fans to see the Heat at home this season. Games are at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. both days.
