Men's league playoffs underway

The Southshore Men’s Baseball League finished its regular season in a flurry of games last week and is already into the playoffs. The season could be wrapped up as early as this Friday. The playoff format is quite different than originally planned. The weekend tournament is off, replaced by a double knock-out weeknight playoff format. Thus, if the ‘A’ side winner wins Friday’s game, the season is over. If the ‘B’ winner prevails, they’ll need another game to decide it.
The Sawridge Heat ended up winning the league with a perfect 15 and 0 record. But since for the past several weeks they knew they weren’t going to participate in playoffs, they didn’t play their last few games. The league decided to simply award them the wins because they probably would have won anyway.
The real drama was in the 11th-hour battle for second place. Until the last week the Wabasca Indians looked to have that spot comfortably in hand. But Cardinals won their last two and the Indians lost their last two, giving both teams 16 points on the season. The Cardinals get second place based on more wins.
The Cards started the week with a 5 – 3 win over Kinuso. That was on Monday, the same night as the Widewater Eagles beat Boss Pressure 9 – 8. By agreement, the game was worth six points, making up for a couple of missed meetings earlier in the season. Tuesday the Cardinals dealt Kinuso another loss, this one 9 – 8.
Wednesday night the Red Sox exploded for several runs in the sixth inning to beat Wabasca 6 – 1 for their fourth win of the season. On Thursday the Eagles beat the Indians 14 – 3. That set up Monday playoff match-ups of Wabasca vs. Kinuso and the Eagles vs. Boss Pressure, with the Cardinals getting the bye.
