Red Sox are Boss in Southshore Men's League

Slave Lake’s Boss Pressure Red Sox rose to the top of the heap in Southshore Men’s Baseball last week, with a 12-2 victory over B-side winners the Slave Lake Cardinals Tuesday evening.
The Sox grabbed a quick lead early in the game, but had to work hard to hold onto a 5-2 lead by the fifth inning.
Albert Bellerive started the game for the Cardinals, and was relieved in the second inning by Ken Olson who kept the team in the ball game for several bats. He bowed out in the seventh after several base hits in the seventh pushed the score into double digits and was relieved by Shannon Olson.
The Sox produced 14 hits in the game, two of which were home runs – those from Trevor Vance and Garth Lacombe.
Vance was the Sox winning pitcher, striking out seven batters in a complete game. The Cardinals two runs came on five hits.
Semi-finals
The Cardinals won their trip to the finals by defeating the Wabasca Indians 2-1 the previous evening with Shannon Olson on the mound.
“It was a good close game throughout,” says Harry Bartlett who added Olson had a “no-hitter going into the fifth inning.” As well, the game proved itself to be nail-biter when Wabasca had the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In that game, Mike McDonald pitched for Wabasca.
Winners
The Southshore Men’s league has been in existence for 13 years, and of those, the Widewater Eagles won the championship nine times, Wabasca Indians once, Kinuso Brewers once, the Sawridge Heat Junior AA once and Boss Pressure Red Sox once. The Cardinals were often close contenders being finalists other years, Bartlett added.
“This year there was parity in the league with all teams other than the Heat close in the standings.” In fact, he added, the Sox were in fifth place in the regular season, but went through the playoffs undefeated.
“It just proves it’s a good league with anyone capable of winning the championship.”
