Students back to the books
Faces disappeared from one school and magically reappeared in another last week as students flooded back to school in Slave Lake. In particular, a new and improved – and much larger – C.J. Schurter school has seven new teachers, four of those moving in from long-time positions at the neighbouring E.G. Wahlstrom school.
Contractors still waiting for word
With his frustration mounting daily as he watches contractors begin to sell the machinery they don’t use any more, and others silently close their doors, the president of the Northern Oilfield Contractors Association says he’d like to have a frank conversation with Premier Ralph Klein about the hopeless situation companies are facing.

There was plenty of action down at Arena #2 last week, and hockey hadn’t even started. Arena maintenance men Cliff Ching, Wayne Bacon and Albert Miller were busy putting in the ice in preparation for this weekend’s minor hockey tryouts. Here, Miller lays down a second layer of face-off circle, Ching rolls it flat and Bacon sprinkles water over it. All the lines are made of paper, laid over ice that’s been painted white (not the concrete). The full ice-preparation process takes about 40 hours.

Minor Hockey tryouts start this weekend
Tryouts for the ‘AA’ or ‘A’ minor hockey teams happen this weekend at the Arctic Ice Centre. By Sunday those teams will be chosen – at least in the minds of the evaluators. Those who don’t make the cut will play on the ‘A’ or ‘B’ teams. If there are enough for three teams in an age group there will be further tryouts to determine the make-up of those teams.
Cheechoo, Schultz win Gilwood Club Championship
Roger Cheechoo and Connie Schultz prevailed in the Men’s and Ladies divisions at the Gilwood Club Championship on the weekend. George Dashkewytch, Lorette Chouinard and Anthony Thurber cleaned up in the Senior Men, Senior Ladies and Junior divisions, respectively.
