Tough news for late Midget registrations

With 55 players registered in the Midget division of minor hockey in Slave Lake, there just isn’t room for any more.
“We’ve capped it at 55,” says association spokesman Kyle Paulson. “If anybody else registers they’ll be put on a waiting list.”
That’s tough news for the latecomer and a highly unusual situation for Midget hockey in Slave Lake. But there is such a thing as an upper limit, and it appears three teams of about 18 players each is it.
“We’re only allowed so many cards per team,” Paulson says.
Pee Wee and Atom numbers are getting up there too, at 46 and 45 players each. They’ll both have three teams too, while the Bantams, at 35, will have just two. Their numbers could be capped too, Paulson says.
The Novice division (ages 7-8) will make three teams out of 49 players and the 36 Shavers (5-6) will likewise divide into three.
The Sturgeon Pembina League Midget ‘AA’ schedule came out last week. Slave Lake will play 24 games, starting at home on Friday, Oct. 3 against Athabasca. There are just six teams in the league this season – Edson, Whitecourt, Westlock and Barrhead are the others.
Other news coming out of last week’s minor hockey meeting is the association’s decision to survey hockey parents on some of the “big issues,” facing the organization. Examples of such issues are questions about when hockey season should begin and end, how many practices should be the price of registration guarantee, and what fundraising money should be used for.
Minor Hockey will be running a casino at St. Albert on a Saturday and Sunday in November as a fundraising venture. Volunteers must take a day of training beforehand, and according to Paulson, there are plenty of them. Word is the Slave Lake Sharks did the same thing recently and were quite successful. If Minor Hockey could pull in a few thousand in one weekend it would take some financial pressure off the organization for the coming season.
