Metis win special hunting rights
Metis people in Alberta can still be charged for hunting out of season, but probably not for long. Thanks to a recent Supreme Court of Canada decision, the Metis seem destined to have the same hunting privileges as Treaty Indians.

Housing starts on the decline in '03
Development has dropped substantially in Slave Lake during the first seven months of 2003, and part of the reason could be a shortage of serviced lots, admits the Town’s development officer.

Contractor Grant Drewniak counts roof planks in Arena #1 last week, as the Alumisorb reflective strips hang down. The Alumisorb must be totally stripped, reardless of where the roof repairs are, Drewniak says, because the engineer wants to inspect the whole thing before giving the green light.

Arena #1 ice delay should be two weeks
After what seemed like a very long wait for an engineer’s report, the Town of Slave Lake last week announced its verdict on the roof repairs to Arena #1 at the Arctic Ice Centre. The opening of the rink will be put back two weeks, to Oct. 13. Work on fixing the water-damaged roof commenced on Sept. 24 and is expected to take about two weeks –although Town Recreation Manager Karl Hill warned last week that is only an estimate.

Wolves shaping up

A couple of days before their season starts, the Slave Lake Wolves’ roster was finally getting set, and the coaching situation looked a bit better too. Tonight (Wed. Oct. 1) in Peace River against the Navigators they find out how the last minute scramble for a goalie and for a bench boss plays out.
