Slave Lake, Alberta

Wolves shaping up

Joe McWilliams

A couple of days before their season starts, the Slave Lake Wolves’ roster was finally getting set, and the coaching situation looked a bit better too. Tonight (Wed. Oct. 1) in Peace River against the Navigators they find out how the last minute scramble for a goalie and for a bench boss plays out.
Last minute is not an exaggeration. On Monday morning Wolves’ President Larry Leganchuk still hadn’t seen his goalie.
“He should be here tonight,” Leganchuk said.
The goalie is a southern Alberta player who, Leganchuk says, led his league in goals-against average last season despite playing for a losing team.
Donovan Nicholas – the Wolves second leading scorer from last season – showed up on Sunday.
The coaching situation sees Travis Sinclair and Darby Bannister committed to running practices and home games. Just exactly who will be behind the bench on road games is a bit of a question mark.
The players roster looks like this: Blair Sinclair, Ryan Sinclair, Robin Edwards, Gregg Whitney, Lawrence Anderson and Nathan Gladue on defense; James Leganchuk, Jeff Green, Trevor Reay, Michael Zinyk, Grant Hawkins, Darryl Garon, Dane Boisvert, Shawn Gramlich, Justin Rask, Al Beaulac, Nicholas, T.J. Cunningham and Justin Dunlop at forward. There are three players from Wabasca and a couple more from High Prairie who have indicated a desire to play but aren’t yet signed to cards, Leganchuk says.
The Wolves host Sexsmith this Saturday and Sunday.
