Slave Lake, Alberta

Hard luck Wolves lose two more

Joe McWilliams
Lakeside Leader

Early leads, late losses. That’s the way the Wolves’ weekend went.
On Saturday Slave Lake’s Junior team led Grande Prairie 2 – 0 and lost 6 – 3. Back home on Sunday against Dawson Creek the Wolves outplayed the Jr. Canucks over the first half of the game and had a 1 – 0 first period lead. It evaporated in the second and they ended up losing 5 – 1.
What’s happening? Nobody from the team was available for comment by press time.
In Grande Prairie, the Wolves drew first blood, scoring two quick goals in the second period for the 2 – 0 lead, courtesy of Jeff Green and TJ Cunningham. Then the Wheelers scored four straight.
James Leganchuk added another for Slave Lake in the third. Ryan Penchuk played his first game of the season in goal for the Wolves.
Sunday’s game looked good for a while. The Wolves had Dawson Creek bottled up in their own end for much of the first period. It paid off with a Dane Boisvert goal with 7:03 left in the first. Shawn Gramlich made a sweet pass to a breaking Boisvert back against the flow in the neutral zone that caught the Canuck defencemen totally flat-footed. Boisvert went right up the middle and roofed a shot over DC goalie Davin Bull’s blocker.
But Dawson kept banging away and eventually they started to go in past Darren Cardinal in the Slave Lake net.
The Wolves now have a record of four wins and 10 losses. They may still be in second last place in the league, depending on what the East Moberly Icemen did on the weekend. This week the Wolves play in Peace River on Wednesday night. Grande Prairie and Sexsmith are in town Saturday and Sunday.
