Slave Lake, Alberta

Wolves continue losing skid

Joe McWilliams
Lakeside Leader

Things are not going according to plan for the Slave Lake Wolves. Losers of seven straight games, the Jr. ‘B’ team seems to be unable to do whatever it takes to win a game.
The funny thing is, they showed earlier in the season that they are capable of winning. That was back when the team was barely organized, weren’t used to each other on the ice and in some cases didn’t even know each other’s last names. It looked then as if the season would turn out just fine once they got the wrinkles ironed out. Since then either the other teams have gotten a lot better, or the Wolves have gotten worse. Perhaps both.
Last Wednesday the Wolves lost 5 – 2 in Peace River. They lost 5 – 3 to Grande Prairie at home on Saturday and then 7 – 2 to Sexsmith on Sunday.
The Wolves had their chances in the home game against Grande Prairie. They attacked with enthusiasm through a good part of the game, but didn’t have much to show for it. The Wolves were very much in the game after two periods, however. A couple of giveaways cost them two third period goals against and that was the end of the story.
Al Beaulac, Michael Zinyk and James Leganchuk did Slave Lake’s scoring. Ryan Knapton played most of the game in goal for the Wolves, with Darren Cardinal taking over with 11 minutes left in the third.
Judging by the game summary, the Wolves were never in it in Sexsmith on Sunday. Outshot 47 – 28 and outscored 7 – 2, the only statistic they dominated was in penalty minutes, 131 to 85.
Dane Boisvert and Blair Sinclair scored for the Wolves. Cardinal and Knapton again shared goaltending duties.
