Treaty 8 chiefs reject Bill 49
Chiefs of the Treaty 8 First Nations of Alberta were expected to meet with Premier Ralph Klein Monday (Dec. 15) after they hotly rejected the province’s Bill 49 – the Public Lands Amendment Act – that was passed by the province early this month. And the chiefs have asked Klein to delay implementing the new Act until they’ve spoken.

Vanderwell's against new softwood lumber deal
A proposed solution to the softwood lumber dispute between Canada and the United States is bad business, says a representative of Vanderwell Contractors, the Slave Lake lumber producer. Vanderwell’s will likely line up with other Alberta producers to oppose its ratification.

First two rounds to Winterhawks
The Jasper Wolves came to town for a pair of games against the Winterhawks on the weekend and left licking their wounds. However, they brought out the best in the home team and earned the respect of the league champions in 3 – 0 and 3 – 1 Slave Lake wins.

Twelve skaters not enough for Wolves
The Slave Lake Wolves would have had their work cut out for them with a full squad against Fort St. John on the weekend. With just 12 skaters, it wasn’t really a fair fight.
