Three-year-old Carlee Derkoch was one of several dancers who stole the show at the Southshore Community Complex Saturday evening as Slave Lake’s Ukrainian Cultural Society celebrated the Ukrainian New Year with food, dance and a whole lot of fun.

Slave Lake name change proposal draws fire
Suggestions in a tourism periodical that Slave Lake’s tourism potential and ‘salability’ could multiply quickly if Town fathers agreed to replace its name with a softer, gentler moniker – like Grizzly Ridge, Pelican Hub, or Paradise Bay – has drawn the ire of some residents. Economic Development officer Steve Lane's idea was particularly offensive to some who were born and raised in the community.

Airborne salt causes power outage
A two-hour power outage that struck while most Slave Lake residents slept early Wednesday morning happened when salt from the highway began coating the insulators on power lines east of the community. And a simultaneous outage along the Southshore that lasted almost until 7:00 a.m. happened when an insulator sparked a fire, melting the line in Widewater.

The Wolves spent more time in the other team’s end on Saturday night, but the Beaverlodge Blades did make things interesting once in a while. Here, Wolves’ goalie Brandon Parenteau makes the save, Ryan Sinclair (#17) looks to clear the puck and Gregg Whitney clears out the Beaverlodge captain.

Wolves win!
The Slave Lake Wolves finally threw the monkey off their backs with a two-win weekend. Granted, they did it against the two weakest teams in the league, besides themselves, but they are teams the Wolves have been losing to along with everyone else for quite some time.

Winterhawks pick up two points in Jasper
Don’t go down to Jasper if you aren’t ready for the action. That’s what the Slave Lake Winterhawks learned on the weekend, when they showed up with less than a full squad of players and got hammered 9 – 5.
