Driving winds made the -38C temperatures feel more like -52C last week as the ‘ghosts’ of cold resulted in mysteriously frozen automobiles, hours-long waits for tow trucks, repair shops, furnace repairmen and a shortage of flowers because delivery was too risky.Vehicles left running all day long left a dense fog blanketing the community, and while the cold turned streets and highways to instant ice, the RCMP reported drivers were somehow saved from serious injuries or damage to vehicles. This twosome was on a hunt for a winter parka as it braved the biting winds Tuesday.

Business bullish on Slave Lake, survey finds
A full one third of businesses responding to a recent survey of businesses in the Slave Lake area say they plan to expand in the next three years, and it’s that confidence that has surveyors excited with the community’s economic outlook.

Three-way stop raises concerns
By the time this story hits the street there ought to be a three-way stop at the Tags intersection in southeast Slave Lake. It will be in place for a 30-day trial period, and then Slave Lake Town council will decide whether to stick with it or do something else.

Steve Mayner (l) and Eddie Nash of the Vertech Consulting rink bear down during Saturday action at the Men’s Open Bonspiel on the weekend. The Blair Talaga team from Mundare won the ‘A’ Event over Slave Lake Hotshot. In the ‘B’ final, Lyle Ruecker beat Chris Jones and in the ‘C’, Grant Talaga beat Seguin Construction. The Ladies’ Open is the weekend after next.

Winterhawks pound Hinton
The Hinton Heat put up a good fight in the first game, but lost anyway. In Sunday’s game against the Slave Lake Winterhawks, they folded up their tents early and let the ‘Hawks stomp all over them. They might as well have mailed in the two points.

Late Sawridge Chief receives boxing honour
The late Sawridge First Nation Chief Walter Twinn received a rare honour from the Edmonton Boxing and Wrestling Commission last week. The Commission named Twinn to its Honour Roll – similar to a hall of fame. His name will go up with others on a plaque at Edmonton City Hall.
