Three-way stop gets mixed reviews
The new three-way stop at the Tags corner in southeast Slave Lake is a cash grab by the Town, pure and simple. That’s what one caller told The Leader last week.
Industry faces tax hike as M.D. balances budget
It’s the first sizable increase in several years, but industrial taxpayers in the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River will see a five per cent increase in taxes this year. The hike came after M.D. council found itself about $.75 million short of balancing the budget for 2004 and could only trim about $.5 million in administration, transportation and environment departments. Council also dipped into every reserve it could find to help ease the strain.

Sports Highlights

The Slave Lake Curling Club was rockin’ on the weekend, with 31 teams competing in the Ladies’ Open Bonspiel, includinng several from out of town. Blue Cross of Grande Prairie won the ‘A’ Event, over C. Herman Trucking. Bonnie Nash of Slave Lake beat Triple Y in the ‘B’ final, and Barb Severson’s Fas Gas Plus rink defeated Northern Spirit of High Prairie in the ‘C’ Event.

'Hawks on form as playoffs begin
There were no surprises as Slave Lake’s Senior Men’s team opened its first-round North Central Hockey League playoff series against the Fox Creek Bandits on the weekend. On Saturday the 'Hawks demolished the Bandits 13 – 0 at the Arctic Ice Centre. On Sunday they won 8 – 4 in Fox Creek.
Wolves sneak back into seventh place
The Slave Lake Wolves managed to avoid last place in the Northwest Jr. Hockey League by winning their final game of the regular season on Sunday.
