You’re looking at something called the ‘Rotary Wheel’ out on the lake ice . When it drops through the ice, somebody is going to be $800 richer. Folks have been betting on the date by buying tickets in the Rotary Club fundraiser. Only 2,000 tickets at $2 each are available.

Town property tax up 4.8 per cent
Slave Lake property owners are facing a 4.8 per cent tax increase this year, according to the new budget adopted by Slave Lake Town Council on Feb. 17. But it isn’t quite written in stone, thanks to last-minute news from both the federal and provincial governments.

Forcing people to pave their driveways
There’s a plan in the works to force Slave Lake homeowners to pave their driveways. But for questions about its legal enforceability, the plan might have become policy at last week’s Town Council meeting. As it is, the ‘Six-Year Driveway Hard Surfacing Plan’ is going back to the drawing board.

Sports Highlights

John Michelmann of Team Alberta North practices his one-foot high kick in preparation for the Arctic Winter Games. Michelmann, along with three other students from St. Mary of the Lake School, is competing in Inuit Games at the Arctic Winter Games in Ft. McMurray. Michelmann holds the Alberta record for the one-foot kick at 7’3”. Altogether 17 athletes and coaches from Slave Lake are participating in the 2004 games, in Inuit and Dene Games, as well as snowshoeing. The Games run from Feb. 28 - Mar. 6.

Wolves out in three
The season is over for the Slave Lake Wolves, and just when they were starting to play some good hockey. Good, but not good enough to beat the Fort St. John Huskies, who are also playing some good hockey.

Winterhawks will play Jasper Wolves
It will be a Jasper – Slave Lake final in the North Central Hockey League. The news came through early Monday morning that Jasper had prevailed in its hard-fought best-of-five semi-final series against Hinton.
