Slave Lake, Alberta

The Page

Last week was Community Future Development Corporation Week, believe it or not, and it did not go unrecognized in Slave Lake. Slave Lake is one of 27 communities in the province served by such an organization. It’s called the Lesser Slave Lake Community Development Corporation, and it provides business planning, loans and other services to people in a region that includes High Prairie and outlying communities.
The CDC hosted a appreciation luncheon at The Point Steakhouse last Tuesday, attended by representatives of some of the organizations that work with the CDC in enhancing business development in the area. Among them were Tim Smith of the Royal Bank, J.R. Giroux of the Driftpile First Nation, George Wright of the Treasury Branch, Town and M.D. Economic Development Officer Steve Lane, Town Treasurer Irene Sasyniuk, Karina Pillay-Kinnee of the Slave Lake Adult Education Committee, Miro Micovsky of Big Lake Country Tourism and Blaine Sepos of Travel Alberta North, as well as the CDC staff, decked out in maroon. Edie had everybody introduce themselves and tell of the scariest experience of their lives, and it went over very well. Steve recounted a tale of being chased down a runway by an unexpected 747 and Tim told of a bear visiting his campsite. Blaine’s scary tale was about being the next bungee jumper in line behind the guy whose cord was set incorrectly. One fellow (whose name we didn’t catch) talked about getting up to speak in front of an audience and realizing his zipper was down!
And that’s how it goes when Edie invites you to lunch.
