Slave Lake, Alberta

The Page

We were pleasantly surprised to see a face from the past (no, we don’t mean an old face) on the street last week. It belonged to former RCMP Staff Sergeant Lance Stewart…who graced this detachment in the early 1990s.
For those unfamiliar with that continuing saga, Lance retired shortly after he left Slave Lake in late 1995..but before long we heard he was ‘re-mounting’, as in rejoining the force, going through training at depot in Regina, Saskatchewan, the whole nine yards.
Like all recruits, he started as a constable, but has since worked his way up to corporal status. He’s currently serving in Prince Rupert, British Columbia and insists he plans to retire again (really, really he insists) later this year. But somehow, we have our serious doubts.

Comedian Shirley Best will be in town next Monday, Mar. 22, doing what she does best – making people laugh. She’s here at the invitation of the Metis Association’s Employment and Training Preparation Program, and they’re hoping for a good crowd down at the college to hear the best of Best.
Shirley Best is actually Zandra Bell, a professional comedian. Shirley is her alter-ego, a polyester-clad 50-something housewife, with plenty of opinions about what goes on.
The show is at 7:00 p.m. at Northern Lakes College, and the doors open at 6:30. Admission is free.
The Employment and Training Preparation Program is a six-week course with 11 students, designed to get them ready to jump into the job market. It includes life skills training, safety tickets and other skills. According to program participant Jessica Tanghe, the program had some money left over, and decided to spend it on a comedian.

And for those who noticed our huge error in forgetting to mention the time and date for the Slave Lake Library Board’s annual Mystery Dinner Theatre, we apologize. In fact, the dinner runs Saturday., Mar. 27, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
And as usual, the tickets are going fast.

The same holds true for the Rotary club’s Ice Out contest. Guesses go all the way from mid April to early June, but the unseasonably mild weather might be a factor. At any rate, hurry. That $800 prize is waiting.
