More community constables needed, says mayor
Does Slave Lake have as many community constables or RCMP members as it needs? Mayor Ray Stern said that’s the question councillors will debate this month as they receive a $106,000 policing bonus from the province. They’ll have to decide if they should hire another constable or two, or merely use the windfall to help balance the annual budget, Stern told Chamber of Commerce members last week.

Tobacco cop issues warnings
“With numbers that bad, you can be guaranteed I’ll be back.” That promise last week from Peter Thirnbeck a tobacco inspector with Health Canada after he visited several communities in the Lesser Slave Lake region and found they’re not being careful about tobacco sales. Specifically he and young co-workers visited several retail outlets looking for cigarette papers.

Season is history as Wolves hand out awards
It wasn’t the greatest of seasons for the Slave Lake Wolves. But as Coach Jim Zinyk observed at last Friday’s awards banquet for the Jr. ‘B’ team, the 2003/04 campaign wasn’t without its positives.

Figure skaters win more medals in Hinton
Slave Lake figure skaters brought home seven medals as they finished their competitive season at the Rocky Mountain Invitational Competition in Hinton from Mar 26-28th. Seven local skaters competed in the largest event of the season with clubs from throughout Alberta and B.C.
