Fire crews responded quickly to an alarm from Slave Lake’s Legion Manor Friday evening and in doing so managed to keep the damage minimal and allowed the seniors who live there to sleep in their own beds that night.
“It certainly could have been real bad,” if not for alert individuals who noticed the smoke at 10:00 and immediately called 911 before most people headed to bed, fire chief Greg Gramiak said Monday morning.
He could not offer an estimate of damage at that point, but said renovations were happening, and he suspected it had an electrical start. Firefighters had the blaze under control and smoke cleared from the building soon enough to allow Manor residents back home in two hours.
“The residents were very helpful and organized, as were staff at Vanderwell lodge who took them in” after fire crews evacuated the Legion facility.
