Mayor charged with assault

A business deal gone bad is allegedly at the root of a confrontation that led Slave Lake RCMP to charge Mayor Ray Stern with a single count of assault.
A release from Cpl. Don Murray says officers investigated a complaint of a “physical confrontation …between two males over a business-related disagreement” on Apr. 20, and subsequently charged the owner of Ray Stern Homes with assault.
Stern will appear in Slave Lake Provincial Court May. 26 to answer to the charges. Murray was quick to point out that the police investigation “does not reveal any allegations of wrong-doing in connection with the elected office currently held by Stern.”
The Municipal Government Act, however, says any elected official convicted of an offense under the Criminal Code must step down.
