Sharks shine in first two meets

The Slave Lake Sharks swim club competed in swim meets in Peace River and Grande Prairie so far this month, achieving some impressive results.
At the Peace River meet June 12, five Sharks won gold aggregate for their overall performance in four events. Sean McFarlane won gold in the Boys 6 and Under category, based on a first in the 50 Free, 25 Fly and third in the 25 Back and 25 Free. Kendra Verschoor (Girls 9&10) was first in the 100 Free, 50 Back and 100 IM and second in 50 Free – good for gold aggregate in her age group.
Continuing the gold rush, Kirk Lukan-Ruecker won gold aggregate in the Boys 9&10 with a first place sweep of the 100 Free, 25 Fly, 50 Free and 100 IM. Brooke Verschoor (Girls 11&12) won gold aggregate on the strength of her firsts in 50 Fly, 50 Back, 100 IM and second in the 100 Fly.
Morgan Hogberg won gold aggregate in Boys 17 & Over with firsts in 50 Fly, 100 Back, 200 IM and 100 Fly.
Rudi Leishman won bronze aggregate in Girls 17 & Over with a first in 100 Breast, second in 100 Free, 50 Fly and 50 Free. Dustin Leishman won bronze aggregate in Boys 17 & Over with firsts in 100 Free and 50 Free and third in the 50 Fly.
The Peace River meet doubled as a qualifier for the Alberta Summer Games, being held this year in Okotoks July 22 – 25. Rudi Leishman, Courtney Schmode, Caylynn Maunder, Denise Potvin, Colin Kazakoff and Dylan MacIntyre of the Sharks made the regional team. Sharks coaches Lenny Richer will coach the team and his assistant Darcy Ruecker will go as a chaperone.
Fifteen Sharks made the trip to Grande Prairie on June 19. Winning aggregate golds were Dustin Leishman and Morgan Hogberg. Kirk Lukan-Ruecker and Rudi Leishman both won silver aggregate in their age groups.
Hogberg and Dustin Leishman each won three races and places third in a fourth. Lukan-Ruecker and Rudi Leishman each won two races and placed in two others.
In addition to the aggregate achievements, numerous Sharks improved their personal best times in the meets.
The Sharks’ next compete in High Prairie on July 10. They host a meet on July 17.
