It took three hard-fought grueling games, but Slave Lake’s Storm ladies’ fastball team headed into the second round of their league playoffs last Monday evening after advancing victorious from a see-saw first round.
The Storm led off with and hands-down 13-5 routing of the Gift Lake Bunnies at home last Monday.
The Bunnies led off scoring with a hit from Carla (last names not available) in the top of the first inning, but the Storm responded with six, thanks to the efforts of Marcy Hatch, Ashley Kerr, Jessica Bergersen, Lesley Emes, Stacy Pelletier and Tracy Scott.
The Gift Lake team responded with one in the second, thanks to a hit from Sandra, but the Storm roared back with two, off the bats of Bergersen and third baseman Acara Kara.
In their trip to the bat, Dorothy and Erica made it around the bases to bring the Bunnies within four runs of the Storm that was scoreless in the third, rounding out that inning with a 8-4 lead.
The Bunnies’ Marlene was the only one to round the bases in the fourth.
Bergersen notched her third run in the fifth and the Storm kept the Bunnies scoreless in the fifth, sixth and seventh.
Scott scored in the sixth to help the Storm wrap up the inning with a 13-5 lead.
Spokesman Hatch praised the Storm effort following the first game.
“Ashley was really good and pitched the whole game. Everyone was hitting, hitting the holes so tonight will be interesting.”
But ‘interesting’ turned into a defeat for the Storm on the Bunnies’ home turf in Gift Lake. Details on that match were not available.
The teams faced off again last Thursday, back in Slave Lake where Storm eked out a 5-4 win.
Those runs started with one from Hatch in the first inning, but the Bunnies came back with two in the second. Trina Vercholuk tied the score in the third, with Kerr giving the Storm a 3-2 lead minutes later.
The team held that lead until the Bunnies sneaked into the lead with two.
Hatch and Kerr replied with one apiece in the bottom of the sixth giving the Storm the edge it needed through the remaining scoreless innings.
The win advanced the team to the second round that began Monday evening – against the Gift Lake Extreme in Gift Lake.
