Calahasen defies challenge
In her speech to party faithful, Lesser Slave Lake MLA Pearl Calahasen said she’s “running harder than I ever thought I could.” And supporters offered their thanks with a check mark at the voting stations Thursday as the incumbent received nearly twice the votes of her only opponent, Sheila Foley. The final count from polling stations in Kinuso, Wabasca and Red Earth Creek revealed 1,113 votes for Calahasen and 632 for Foley.
Worker dies at CNRL well site
A 25-year-old Millet man died accidentally at a Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. Nipisi well site last week, when he was electrocuted while working on a power box at the site 90 km north of Slave Lake.

Twelve swimmers to provincials
A stunning performance by Slave Lake swimmers at the regional meet in Grande Prairie on the weekend means this community will be strongly represented at the provincial championships in Edmonton. Twelve of the 21 Slave Lake Sharks won a spot on the Region ‘A’ (northwestern Alberta) team by finishing first or second in their races. Even more impressive, four of the 12 aggregate awards went to Slave Lake swimmers.
Slowpitch league playoffs in high gear
The action is hot and heavy over at the Slave Lake slowpitch fields this week as slowpitch league playoffs continue. Last week there were 13 games in the double knockout tournament, leaving five teams on the outside looking in, but the rest still alive and kicking.
