With fewer than three weeks left until nomination day for municipal elections in Alberta, candidates are beginning to surface in the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River.
Councillor Denny Garratt announced two months ago that he wants to replace a retiring Reeve Sheila Foley in the Oct. 18 contest. And last week incumbent councillor Pat Monteith said she too wants the job. "There's been some pressure put on me to do that, and if we’re going to have a new reeve, it should be someone with a little experience.”
A number of current councillors said they wouldn’t be running again.
Those include Smith councillor Debbie Parsons and Southshore rep Karl Gongos.
Marten and Devonshire Beaches’ Councillor Jerry Wallsten has still to decide if he’ll offer to represent his neighbours for a second term.
But in recent discussions with The Leader, 28-year resident Brian Rosche said he expects to let his name stand in the Southshore communities.
Flatbush area resident and councillor, Tim Walmsley had his tongue in his cheek when he said he’d run again “if I can find enough beer bottles in the ditch to pay my taxes.”
In the same region, Murray Kerik announced he wants to sit on the council that held his dad Duane’s interest for so long. Duane served as councillor, then reeve for three terms. He stepped down three years ago.
The younger Kerik says he’s running for council, not the reeve’s chair because quite simply, “I think I’d better walk before I start running.”
And being on council, he adds, “is called doing your part.”
