No one is breathing a word about timing for the next provincial election, but provincially appointed enumerators began knocking on doors across Alberta Saturday as they compile the official List of Electors, says a release from the province’s Chief Electoral Officer O. Brian Fjeldheim. It adds that office asked the enumerators to complete their jobs by next Sunday, Sept. 12.
People who will be at least 18 years old by Oct. 1, who are Canadian citizens and who have lived in Alberta since Apr. 1, will be added to the list of eligible voters in the upcoming provincial election.
Electors will be asked to provide their names, addresses and phone numbers, as well as genders, birth dates so the department can electronically update its list. The release says gender and birth dates are for administrative use only, and will not appear on any voter list.
“Elections Alberta may share information with municipal and federal electoral agencies to maximize efficiencies and minimize the duplication of cost and effort associated with data collection.
“Information will only be used for electoral purposes authorized by law.”
The province expects the data collection process to create a list of over two million electors. The list “will be made available to political entities identified in the Election Act to prepare for the next provincial general election.”
But the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River won’t have official voters’ list, says returning officer for the M.D., Kelly Adelman.
Instead, people living in the municipality need only sign an oath on election day, swearing that they’re at least 18, are Canadian citizens living in Alberta for the past six months.
Finally, they must live in the M.D., on election day.
The process is similar for the Town of Slave Lake, says returning officer Ed Procyshyn.
“They come in, swear a statement of eligibility and vote.”
