Night time is the right time to catch owls, and that’s what Richard Krikun of the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory was doing last week when this northern saw-whet owl flew into his net. Krikun is banding and taking feather samples from the small owls.

Wolves’ goalie Pifin Johnson rejects a Brent Blachford scoring attempt in a scrimmage between the two teams last Thursday night. The Wolves were tuning up for this weekend’s exhibition doubleheader against Beaumont in Calling Lake and the Winterhawks were getting ready for an exhibition tournament in Grande Prairie.

The Slave Lake Winterhawks will have to do without Curtis Poitras on defence this year. According to team manager Terry Beauchamp, Poitras is hanging ‘em up, along with forward Craig Dombrosky.

Minor Hockey adds 'pond' program
What’s new in Slave Lake Minor Hockey circles this year is a pond hockey program. “It’s shinny,” says Association President Patty Stephen. “They’ll do about 10 minutes of drills and then just play.”
