Slave Lake, Alberta

The Page

We hear Robert Mills, the long-time woodlands manager for Weyerhaeuser in Slave Lake, is back in the business doing the same job for Tolko in High Prairie. Robert retired from Weyerhaeuser a couple of years ago to pursue other ventures, but somehow Tolko lured him to the town at the other end of the lake. Our congratulations to the big fella and best wishes.

Be a librarian for a day? Well why not? The Slave Lake Municipal Library is inviting competition to do just that. All you have to do is explain what the library means to you and why you’d like to be librarian for a day in 700 words or less. Do it by Oct. 24.
Manisha at the library tells us the library will be open Sundays for three hours, starting Oct. 24, until Dec. 19, to see how it’s received.

Speaking of the library, on Saturday they’re having their second multicultural event, called Colours of India. The first one – an Arabian-theme event, was pretty successful. This one’s at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23.

You might have seen a photo in the paper of Rob Irwin’s downtown election BBQ in aid of the Northern Haven Support Society and the Slave Lake Food Bank. Rob phoned the other day to let us know the event raised $400 for the cause. “We had about 100 people come through,” Rob said. “Ninety burgers, two dozen hot dogs, a dozen smokies.” Win or lose in Monday’s council election, Rob said the BBQ was a good experience and he’d like to organize another one.

And while we wind down from the municipal election furor (we hope) and wait for Premier Ralph to drop the provincial writ, we see there’s a lot happening in our community in the way of fun, feasts and festivities.
The Slave Lake Native Friendship Centre is set to host its annual very colourful Native Princess Pageant.
